About Fort Bliss

Ft. Bliss of El Paso, Texas is one of the largest army complexes in the United States located on approximately 1.12 million acres in both Texas and New Mexico. It sits adjacent to the White Sands Missile Range in southern New Mexico and near the Rio Grande, which separates the state of Texas from the Mexican states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas. It has survived many changes and continues to be transformed from a Training and Doctrine Command to a Forces Command.

Established in 1848, Ft. Bliss has seen its share of wind and dust storms, often experiencing very hot, dry summers and mild winters. Thunderstorms can be extreme, resulting in flash flooding and hail. Because of these weather extremes, training at Ft. Bliss provides soldiers with real challenges, preparing them for such extremes when deployed to foreign soil.

Ft. Bliss is one of the army's oldest installations. Its original purpose was to act as a liaison between Native Americans and the Mexican government. It wasn't until 1854, however, after it was relocated, that Ft. Bliss got its name in honor of Lieutenant Colonel William Wallace Smith Bliss. In 1916-1917, General John J. Pershing lead a failed expedition into Mexico from Ft. Bliss in search of the legendary outlaw Pancho Villa.

In 2011, Ft. Bliss became the home to the 1st Armored Division, which returned to United States soil after 40 years in Germany. Currently, Ft. Bliss is going through a transformation with $5 billion being dedicated to expand services such as youth programs, housing, training ranges, medical clinics and much more to meet the demands of a growing population. Ft. Bliss is a place of diversity and continues to be able to change with the times, making it one of the greatest installations in the United States.
